Mishicot Reads!

At OH Schultz Elementary school, I run two programs in the library to help increase the community engagement of families with young students as well as the amount of reading they do at a young age. The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program encourages families with young children to read early and often. Over the last year, participation in both of these programs has increased. Activists in Training: Using Picture Books to Discuss Social Justice with Students
Limited Capacity seats available

In this timely session, we will explore stories of social justice: equitable access to wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society. Bree Picower’s Six Elements of Social Justice Curriculum Design includes self love and knowledge, respect for others, issues of social injustice, social movements and social change, awareness raising and social action. These Six Elements will guide the introduction of picture books and lesson ideas that librarians and teachers can immediately implement to approach this complex yet critical topic with our students. Emphasis will be placed on how these stories fit the conference theme of Access for All by investigating how students can “engage critically with the world around them…to value themselves, respect the diversity of the world around them, understand how diverse people have been treated differently and often unjustly, recognize that ordinary people have worked to address such injustice, and take action themselves” (Picower, 2012).

Activists in Training: Using Picture Books to Discuss Social Justice with Students

Dewey See It.....or Dewey Not? From Drab to Fab
What started as a thought to rid ourselves of the Dewey Decimal system, grew into a whole transformation of a library. Our library went from a drab space to a fab space that everyone wants to use. By adding a Makerspace, comfortable/flexible seating, ridding ourselves of Dewey, and so much more, we created a space that is welcoming and provides access for all. We'll provide you with the steps we took to transform our library.

Genre Shelving: A Spot in the Stacks for All of Us
Students tell us all the time about the kinds of books they prefer to read: “Where are the sports books?” “I only like fantasy books.” However, our libraries aren’t necessarily organized in a way that matches these different readers.

In order to assist readers as they browse, we decided to convert our “Dewey Fiction” sections at the middle and high school from FIC AUT to more meaningful areas like FANTASY and SPORTS. While genre stickers aren’t new, our students are loving having dedicated sections for “their kind” of books.

This poster session will share our decision-making process, the models we considered, and the logistics of moving to genre shelving. Learn how you can help your different kinds of readers find their spot in the stacks!

The session’s focus is on Google Classroom as a tool to use as a central location for providing assignments, announcements, feedback, and assessments. Being that Google Suite is a free set of tools for any subscribing district, it is accessible for the majority of educators. As I work in a Title I district, many of my students do not have Internet or a computer at home but do have a phone with access to classroom to check on any assignments or teacher feedback. I will present using my classroom as an example, with Google Sites as a secondary tool that would be discussed. Integrated in the presentation will be the student assignments, examples of feedback given, and outside tools (free) to get the most out of Google Classroom.
Will briefly review tools seen in my Classroom used as entry/exit tickets, student collaboration, and a few key extensions to enhance learning for all students. It will be informational, but audience can use computers to add extensions and tools presented.

DANGER Will Robinson - the Kids are Out of Control
You can have the best technology, but without the ability to effectively and efficiently control the classroom your best lessons, at the very least, go under-delivered and you fail to reach ALL your students. On average, educators lose 5-9 hours of instructional time a week due to low-level discipline challenges. Over the course of an entire academic school year that can be as much as 324 hours or 46 instructional days! Imagine what you could do with that lost time! In this engaging and powerful session, participants will learn how to increase academic achievement through decreased discipline challenges, gain administrative and parental support, empower all educators, and provide real opportunities to reach all their students. Educators have reported reducing classroom disruptions and discipline by 70% or more using these strategies! Participants will be armed with strategies that WILL change the classroom and campus environment immediately, allowing them to regain control!

Ebooks vs. Print Books: Tips and Tricks for Promoting Access For All

As well as “tools” for showcasing and promoting library collections, and protecting the library collections.

Google Slides are an excellent and versatile tool. You can use Google Slides as an interactive notebook for your classes. The students can easily create an interactive notebook. They can keep notes, answer questions, insert drawings, pictures and videos. Instead of having a composition notebook for a reading journal, they can have an interactive notebook that will never get lost or damaged. The possibilities using the interactive notebook is endless.

Mishicot Reads!
At OH Schultz Elementary school, I run two programs in the library to help increase the community engagement of families with young students as well as the amount of reading they do at a young age. The OH Schultz Summer Library program is an opportunity for families to come to the library throughout the summer to check out books, and do a variety of STEAM focused activities. The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program encourages families with young children to read early and often. Over the last year, participation in both of these programs has increased. This session will focus on the basics of these programs, including what has worked and what has not to help increase reading and involvement of young families in the Mishicot School District.

Taking Your Mobile Learning to the Next Level
In 1956, Benjamin Bloom developed a set of categories for learning called Bloom’s Taxonomy for Learning. During the 1990s the taxonomy was updated to reflect 21st century skills. Since then, Allen Carrington created a Wheel of Pedagogy to guide educators in mobile application integration. This taxonomy provides guidance to educators as to what levels students may be working. These levels can and should be applied to mobile learning. This session will have you making the connection between Bloom’s Taxonomy and SAMR as you explore mobile apps that align with the various taxonomy levels.

This session supports using any mobile device to engage students in learning at all levels of Bloom's Taxonomy.

Designing Experiences: Using videogames, field work and design to enhance learning
Limited Capacity seats available

During this session we will go on a whirlwind tour of learning science and play, engaging in the three themes of the Field Day Lab: Games and Sims, Field Work and Learning through Design. We will hear stories of teachers in Wisconsin creating engaging learning experiences in partnership with our team. For example, theyardgames.org, a collection of 9 science games was made in collaboration with 9 WI science teachers and have been played 60,000 times nationally in just 3 months. We also have built new mobile tools like siftr.org with teachers, that allow anyone to create their own mobile citizen science app in just a few minutes. Our fellowship program recruits cohorts of teachers to explore a common theme together, such as having youth design videogames as a way to learn history. The session will conclude with a call to action, an invitation to collaborate with us in 2017.

Learning Visually
Limited Capacity seats available

Visuals work as a possible equalizer in the classroom because they grab students and allow an entry point to learning — and because they sum up pages and pages, even chapters, of information that would take a reader hours to process. Interactive infographics make kids want to immediately start clicking around to see what’s what, questions start forming organically as they explore and process. Infographics and Data visualization are not just for consumption though, teachers and students can also challenge the learning process by creating original graphics for themselves.

You can create several quizzes for a concept by creating your own questions or looking at a bank of previously made quizzes on a similar topic to allow differentiation so each student takes a quiz that is at their level, allowing equal access for all students without anyone knowing that the quizzes are different. In this session you will learn how to set up your class, enroll your students and monitor their progress through all these parts of BrainPOP, use the BrainPOP Educator feature, and more!!

Google Classroom - Central Source for Content, Feedback, and Communication between Students, Parents, and Teachers
Limited Capacity seats available

This session will focus on how to utiIize Google Classroom daily, while supported by Google Sites. The two are essential in reaching students and provide parents transparency/easy access to classroom materials. The key things covered include the creation of a manageable "stream" in Classroom, exactly where class documents should be placed for fluency, how to differentiate, and how to use Classroom as a resource that has everything the students need to know/access for class each day. Following that, I will dive into why the site is necessary to compliment Google Classroom. The session will include additional tools you can incorporate into Google Classroom and some of the mistakes I've made this year teaching with these resources. The goal is for those in attendance to have a grasp on how they see Classroom being utilized in their setting, to help both the students and educators!

LIGHTS...CAMERA...ACTION! - The 1-2-3’s of Video Production
Limited Capacity seats available

This session will demonstrate a class project involving video production. The library purchased a classroom set of 25 iPads using Common School Funds. Three apps that will be discussed are: iMotion (a free app), iMovie (a free app), Green Screen by Do Ink ($2.99). The session will show how the apps can be used together to create a video easily uploaded and shared on YouTube. When trying to attempt a project this involved, logistics is key. The iPad was never meant to be a communal device. Tips will be shared on how to overcome these obstacles. Sample lessons will be shown, some with a library theme.
School librarians have always had a unique perspective of looking out for the entire school. Part of this responsibility comes from being stewards of the Common School Fund and selecting resources that are accessible to all. Common School Fund monies are to be used to purchase materials that will be universally accessible to all students and staff.

Towards the Design of Contemporary Library Spaces
Limited Capacity seats available

As the intellectual heart of a school, how the library supports student learning is simply mission-critical With this as a grounding construct, we explore the changing nature of what a library is, what it means for learning, and how this translates into the effective design of library spaces. We consider the library as a spatial ecology, giving attendees the opportunity to consider how a physical and digital library can work together to provide an always-on, connective experience that will resonate with today's students. Finally, our exploration of "library" presents the design process as a methodology that librarians can use to continually align and evolve the programs and spaces of the library to create meaningful capacities for student learners Join in for an enriching conversation about the intersection of library, space, and design.

Creating Access for All: Shifting Systems and Structures
Limited Capacity seats available

In the age of standards, we have spent much time discussing the “what” of classrooms and learning, but in this workshop we will look at the “how”. Join Diana Laufenberg in a session about building systems and structures for our classrooms, schools and organizations that allow us to adapt in an ever changing learning landscape. To move the learning beyond simply asking what students should know to asking what they can create, innovate and imagine, we will explore the following: • How do we create enough structure to be effective without becoming so rigid that we can’t innovate? • How do we honor the human experience and not just the efficient outcome? • How do we ensure that it’s technology that serves the learning and not the other way around? Join us for a conversation that may influence the way you think about every decision you make from daily learning objectives to the mission and vision of your school or district.

Rolling Out the Chromebooks: 1:1 in Holmen
Limited Capacity seats available

Are you wondering how you can get more technology in your school and feel like it will never happen? Are you considering a 1 - 1 technology implementation and wondering where to start? Have you started a 1 - 1 technology implementation and run into some troubles? Do you want to hear about a 1 - 1 technology implementation that has gone very smooth and is only getting better? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then this is the session for you.
We are the School District of Holmen. Only 5 short years ago we had low quality computer labs, limited to no wireless access, a deteriorating infrastructure, no vision for technology training and a staff that wanted to use technology but felt it was never going to happen. Since that time we have successfully passed a referendum to implement a 1 - 1 Chromebook initiative for 6th - 12th grade at the start of the 2015 - 2016 school year, deployed over 1600 devices in our district, built a solid infrastructure, have a vision for training and developing staff skills to integrate technology, and a community that support technology in the classroom.
This session will outline our journey and offer information on how we got it right, where we got it wrong (and how we fixed it) and what is next for the School District of Holmen.

The Power of Voice in the Digital Age
Limited Capacity seats available

When technology is used effectively and responsibly we have the ability to share many things, including our thoughts, ideas, and learning in a variety of ways. In some cases, these thoughts can drive change from how we learn to even greater change within our social and political systems. We also need to have a strong understanding of what being a Digital Citizen truly means. The key is to leverage the use of our "voice" as a catalyst for representing and presenting our thinking. This session will take a close look at how technology can and is being used as a conduit for our voice.

Start Making Your Website Accessible For All
Limited Capacity seats available

Your district and community almost certainly has people with physical, sensory, or cognitive disabilities. How do you reach and teach them online? How do they navigate your digital presence effectively?

HHS Section 508 requires that all website content be accessible for people with disabilities. What does that mean? What does it mean for your district’s digital presence?

There are certainly more questions than answers, but there are steps you can take right now to get started. At DASD, we’ve taken small steps toward compliance, including fixing what we can and modifying the training we provide for new site creators.

In this session, I’ll share some tools we’ve used to find out where we stand, what corrections we can make, and how to make them. You’ll spend some time evaluating your school or individual/department website and make a few changes to get started.

You’ll also receive training materials to help others achieve compliance in three areas.

Ebooks vs. Print Books: Tips and Tricks for Promoting Access For All

Carpenter shares the “blueprint” he uses in “building” a quality collection from start to finish in an entertaining style. As well as “tools” for showcasing and promoting library collections, and protecting the library collections.

The Wisconsin Educational Media & Technology Conference: Access for all is about how librarians serve as the library’s gatekeeper through the learning activities, displays, and promotional materials they create to promote intellectual and physical access. Limited Capacity seats available
